Switch from fluorescent products to LED lighting reduces energy consumption and saves funds

The Vale of Glamorgan Council are the latest customers to switch from fluorescent lighting to LED lighting solutions as a means of reducing energy consumption and saving money.

The Welsh council have recently taken advantage of the ‘Salix Scheme,’ a loan available for energy efficiency projects across the public sector. The incentive allows various bodies within the public sector to apply for a loan to finance energy saving projects. The council’s involvement in the scheme has helped to fund improvements to their office site based at Barry docks.

Significant opportunities to save money through reducing energy consumption, whilst at the same time improving lighting levels were soon identified. This was achieved by replacing the existing outdated switch start fluorescent lighting with Dextra’s LED lighting systems.

Improvements to all communal areas, including corridors, toilets and store rooms are already under way as phase one of the project has begun.

With an emphasis placed upon cost savings, two of Dextra Lighting’s LED lighting fixtures were utilised to fulfil the design brief in order to achieve the required payback calculations.

The Graduate LED light fitting was recommended to the council for use within the corridor areas of the building. The multi-purpose product is suitable for a number of environments including corridors, stairways and for education lighting and healthcare lighting purposes.

Boasting excellent energy efficiency capabilities as well as an extended design life backed up by a 5 year warranty, Dextra Lighting relaunched the highly successful Graduate product in an LED variant.

Designed to incorporate the option for microwave sensor lighting to offer presence detection and bright out control, the Graduate LED can increase energy saving capabilities. The product can also be offered with a variety of standalone sensors, such as the Reacta 44.

Constructed with a high efficiency polycarbonate diffuser allowing for optimum light output ratio, the council replaced former fluorescent lighting fittings with the Graduate LED. The product boasts a robust diffuser with screw retained end caps and an integral gear tray.

The toilet and store room areas now boasts the Amenity bulkhead LED fitting, a product which can offer lighting solutions to store rooms, wash rooms, stairwells and corridors. The LED wall lighting offers a 1500 lumen output and light output ratios in excess of 80%. Giving a similar performance to a 28w 2D luminaire, the LED ceiling lighting boasts the benefits of an extended design life alongside a 5 year warranty.

Both LED lighting fixtures have the added benefit of a built in movement microwave sensor to control the fittings on and off on an automatic basis.

Client feedback following work on phase one of the project was excellent, with high hopes that Dextra Lighting’s extensive range of luminaries will, once again be in high demand by the Welsh council for phase two, which will involve all office and meeting rooms.

This particular project has been one of many Dextra Lighting have been working on in collaboration with local council’s in South Wales who are utilising the benefits of the ever-growing extensive range of LED lighting systems.
By offering the two popular interior LED lighting options from their impressive range and replacing former fluorescent lighting fixtures, Dextra were able to achieve both energy savings and an improvement to lighting levels.
