The Midcounties Co-operative is one of the largest independent UK Co-operative Societies with over 720,000 members and 6,600 colleagues and has an annual turnover of £1.34bn.
It operates the Your Co-op family of businesses which spans Food, Travel, Childcare, Utilities and Post Offices. The Society trades nationally through some of its businesses, including Travel, Utilities and Childcare, with its heartlands in Oxfordshire, Gloucestershire, Buckinghamshire, Shropshire, Staffordshire, the West Midlands, Wiltshire, and Worcestershire.
Working closely with the installing electrical contractor, Azura Networks, Dexretail supplied LED’s for this re-fit roll-out project. The main priority was to reduce the lighting energy usage over the Co-op’s entire estate, the majority of which was existing fluorescent. In addition to the energy savings, all of the old fluorescent lighting was removed and packaged by Azura Networks, ready for collection and recycling by Dexreco.
As an energy reduction project, Dexretail surveyed and prepared proposals for an initial batch of 15 stores for review. Immediately after completing this process, the full roll-out was given the go ahead. The full roll-out project had a total capital investment of £2.8m and involved Dexretail supplying new energy efficient lighting to in excess of 130 sites over a 12 month period, including accelerating the run rate when energy prices increased significantly during 2022.
Dexretail provided a custom lumen output of the ARCR DUO fitting used in the sales floor areas, to reduce the total fitting quantity required whilst ensuring the target illuminance and uniformity levels could be achieved across the majority of stores. Where ceiling types and heights allowed, the IN-LINE continuous run system was utilised in cross-aisle orientation to achieve the same specified illuminance and uniformity levels, ensuring a cohesive look across individual stores and their wider store estate.
THE PRODUCTS
ARCUS DUO
The Arcus Duo brings a new aesthetic to our range of LED modular luminaires with a gullwing design and twin high transmission extruded opal diffusers providing excellent efficiency.
The Arcus Duo was chosen for its visual aesthetic, efficiency, vertical illuminance and high lumen output capability.
A bespoke version was supplied with a custom high lumen package, required to achieve the illuminance and uniformity levels set out in the lighting specification.
The Arcus Duo were installed in the main retail shop floor areas.

AMENITY PLUS – CIRCULAR
The Amenity Plus Circular is available in lumen outputs ranging from 1500 to 3000 and is manufactured with an injection moulded polycarbonate housing and diffuser.
The Amenity Plus was chosen as a direct replacement for existing 2D bulkheads and installed in the staff room, locker room, WC and external building perimeter.
