Strawberry Field is the iconic site immortalised by John Lennon and the Beatles in the hit ‘Strawberry Fields Forever’. The gardens and visitor attraction is open to the public to enable them to experience the place that inspired the world-famous Beatles song in the 1960s.
Visitors today are able to immerse themselves in ‘the inspiring history, world-famous music, rich culture and Strawberry Field magic.’
In the exhibition, you can hear stories of John Lennon’s early years from those closest to John, and learn about the history of the site and The Salvation Army; including stories from the former children’s home and the inspiration behind the famous song. The attraction also includes a café and shop.
All sales through the exhibition, cafe and shop fund the Steps at Strawberry Field programmes. These are a series of individually-tailored courses aimed at providing employment skills, work experience and opportunities to volunteer, which empowers those living with learning difficulties or other barriers to employment in the local Liverpool City Region.
The site has been owned by The Salvation Army since 1934 and in 1936 it was opened as a children’s home for girls, with boys being accepted later. John Lennon played in the grounds as a young boy.
In 2019 The Salvation Army built a new complex as a visitor attraction and specialist training centre for young adults with disabilities to help to deliver educational, cultural and spiritual training to help them back into meaningful employment.
As a music company with strong connections to Liverpool, The Salvation Army and LIPA, the Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts, Orange Amps donated a bandstand for Strawberry Field. The theme of the bandstand is based upon the drum depicted on the front of the Beatles album Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. The structure is 4.2m high and has a diameter of 8.5m in diameter and has a 5 degree tilt. Apart from live performances, it is hoped that this will attract more visitors to the centre which will assist The Salvation Army to fund their good work.
Dextra was contacted by Electrical Integrated Services and asked to provide a lighting solution for the bandstand.
Electrical Integrated Services has been a loyal client of Dextra Lighting for many years and naturally approached this subsidiary for assistance with this project. Due to the specialist nature of the products required, Dextra Lighting referred this to LEDextra who specified, managed and supplied the whole project. LEDextra made a donation of some of the light fittings for the project.
Dextra also supplied six Cariboni In-Ground Lights. These were used on the outside of the bandstand, spaced evenly, illuminating the upward white stripe at the base.
