They say research and development is the lifeblood of any industry. This could not be more relevant when it comes to setting standards around measurements – something that is pertinent to nearly every industry in the UK and around the world.
The National Physical Laboratory (NPL) is the UK’s National Metrology Institute (NMI), developing and maintaining the national primary measurement standards, as well as collaborating with other NMIs to maintain the international system of measurement.
In 2022 it worked on 24 projects with 22 companies and helped bridge the gap from a prototype in a research environment to an industry-ready, innovative new product or service. In total 50 companies have worked with NPL via the Measurement for Quantum (M4Q) programme, which supports innovation and drives growth by providing up to 20 days of specialist quantum measurement expertise.
Recently, as part of an on-going programme of upgrades and maintenance to its buildings and laboratories, NPL required new and more efficient lighting.
Working alongside contractor, Russell Cawberry, Dextra supplied lighting for an array of commercial buildings at the campus, with particular focus given to the on-site nursery, where childcare in the form of subsidised early years education is available to all NPL employees.
Dextra’s main focus was an LED upgrade, replacing older fluorescent fixtures, with the aim of significantly reducing running costs with improved energy savings.
THE PRODUCTS
MOD CAELUS
The Mod Caelus is available with a range of graphic designs allowing the simulation of skylights and other decorative features.

Used to provide a calming and interesting view point for babies and small children in the baby changing areas.

AMENITY EXTERIOR – OPEN
The Amenity Exterior Open is manufactured with a tough and durable die cast aluminium housing and injection moulded polycarbonate diffuser.

The MOD Slim is a highly efficient and versatile backlit modular range of luminaires available in a wide range of housing styles and lumen outputs.
