Millfield School, Somerset

Millfield is one of the leading independent schools in the UK for boys and girls, aged 2-18 years.

The school was founded by RJO (Jack) Meyer in 1935, following his return from India with seven Indian boys, six of whom were princes. He came to be known as ‘Boss’ Meyer. The school was originally based in Millfield House, which is today a boarding house, but then was rented from the Clark family who owned most of Street. The school grew steadily and in 1939 became one of the first independent schools to be co-educational.

In 1942, Martin Attlee, son of the then Deputy Prime Minister, Clem, joined the school in the hope of overcoming ‘word-blindness’. The Millfield method was so successful that Martin Attlee went on to university, with the school gaining fame as the first in the country to deal successfully with dyslexic students.

The Senior School based in Street, Somerset sits in 200 acres of grounds which includes facilities such as an Olympic sized swimming pool, golf course, equestrian centre, indoor cricket and golf centres a concert hall, theatre, music centre, 18 boarding houses and 5 day houses as well as cutting edge science facilities.

Various areas of the school have been refurbished which included the upgrading of the lighting.

Dextra was chosen as part of the school’s ethos to use local companies as much as possible as well as its ability to recycle all of the old lighting products, fitting in with the school’s sustainability criteria.

“We have worked closely with Dextra Lighting over the past 5/6 years on numerous LED lighting projects. They have always had an excellent hands-on approach from the out-set, from the design stage to the completion of each project. They have designed and manufactured many bespoke one-off bracketry solutions for many of our projects where the existing lighting/buildings have had complex fixing requirements, while other lighting manufacturers have failed to provide solutions for their products. Dextra Lighting has a lot to offer the school, one important factor to us is the school’s goal for NetZero, which Dextra can help us to achieve with the help of their services . Dextra manufacture their products in Gillingham, only 30miles away from Millfield and they also offer with every project their recycling service Dexreco which we also take full advantage of. Overall, we have continued to be impressed with the quality of the products, their competitive pricing, and the overall experience that Dextra can provide. We look forward to working with them on future projects.”
