Kings College Hospital, London

King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is one of the biggest and busiest Trusts in the country, primarily serving (the London Boroughs of Southwark, Lambeth and Bromley) South East London and acting as a referral centre for millions more people across England. The hospital is also one of only 4 Major Trauma Centres in London and has over 15,000 staff.

Since opening in 1840, King’s has built its reputation as a world class hospital, with roots that lie firmly in the heart of the community its serves. Kings College is both a leading teaching hospital and a local hospital with a diverse inner city population.

Caring for patients from some of the most deprived communities in London, and some of the wealthiest, its world class specialties such as diabetes, liver, sickle cell, neurology, fetal medicine, stroke and blood cancers are largely driven by the health problems of the people around us.

In 2022, it announced that it had started work on a new education and training academy for nurses, midwives and allied healthcare professionals (AHPs), which opened its doors this year.

The new state-of-the-art facility – located in Loughborough Junction, a five-minute walk from the King’s College Hospital site –provides dedicated simulation, teaching and conference rooms for nursing, midwifery and AHP staff, and education facilities across a floor space of 820m2.

The Trust employs over 8,000 nurses, midwives and AHPs, and enhancing training and education opportunities for these staff groups is a key part of the Trust’s five-year strategy and BOLD vision published last year.

The facility houses two dedicated simulation rooms – containing one and two bedded bays respectively – and use the latest manikins to create and recreate immersive patient simulations.

Dedicated debriefing rooms are used for expert staff and teams to review the activity undertaken, exploring performance and delivering education, so creating a completely safe environment to learn in.

Dextra was already an established supplier for the Trust, however, this project was different to the everyday projects delivered so far at the hospital and one the company was proud to be a part of.

Working with contractor Kasher Services and consultant WSP, one of the key challenges Dextra faced was to integrate its wireless Recta Control into its track lighting, providing a simple and effective wireless control system, something that was praised by the client on completion.
