The world-famous Alexandra Palace in north London was opened in 1873, having been designed as the ‘Palace of the People’, with the purpose of providing entertainment and recreation to the masses.
Today the Palace and 196 acre park are run by a charity – the Alexandra Park and Palace Charitable Trust – which continues this mission in 2023 by hosting a programme of live music, sport, festivals, theatre, exhibitions and creative learning opportunities for the local community. Five million people come to Ally Pally each year to enjoy and benefit from these activities, as well visiting the Park and the much-loved ice rink.
In recent years, the Trust has taken huge strides to restore and repurpose sections of the historic Palace. This includes reopening the Victorian Theatre – London’s ‘oldest new theatre’ – in 2018 following 80 years of closure, as part of a major restoration of the Palace’s East Wing. As the organisation looks to the future, it is carrying out a range of projects to ensure that Ally Pally continues to have a positive impact on its visitors and local community, whilst all the time becoming more resilient, accessible and environmentally sustainable. This has included working with consultant Ridge & Partners and contractor Prorite, Dextra who were asked to help with a project to reduce energy costs and modernise the lighting at the Grade II listed Palace.
