University of Wolverhampton

The University of Wolverhampton offers a range of under-graduate degree and postgraduate Masters courses across its sites in Wolverhampton, Telford, Walsall and Burton on Trent. Over 22,000 attend the university each year.

One of the university’s newest buildings is the MX- which is now one of the main teaching and administration buildings on the university’s city campus in Wolverhampton. It is also home to Student Centre Molineux, part of the University of Wolverhampton Business School, Wolverhampton School of Art, Institute of Health Professions, Institute of Psychology and Institute of Public Health, Social Work and Care. Also based there is the School of Humanities, IT Services, Cashiers, Finance, Registry, Human Resources, Estates & Facilities, Health, Safety & Risk and Corporate Services.

The Science Park, situated nearby, has become the home for 100 businesses working in a broad range of technological and creative disciplines including software development, environmental management, engineering design and consultancy, photography and videography, graphics, website design, water technology, training and education, biocidal coatings, healthcare and business support services.

THE SOLUTION

Working with contractor, Central Electrical Contracts, Dextra Lighting were able to offer retrofit products such as the Protec LED downlighters fitted with custom bezels to fit in existing cut outs, all made to a tight deadline.

Dextra’s brief on this project was to update the old fluorescent lighting and improve on energy savings and on-going maintenance costs. The university and contractors were given the confidence to use Dextra’s quality products after a recent visit to its factory in Dorset.

The custom-made Protec LED’s downlighters had white bodies with blue, white, red and green coloured halos on each floor for the MX Building as the client required a different colour on each floor. This was used in the circulation, reception and breakout areas. The custom-made bezels also enabled less disruption onsite because of the installation into existing cut-outs.

For the university project 262 mixed coloured Protec LED were supplied for the MX Building and 86 white coloured ones for the Science Park.

The Protec LED uses the highest quality components with cutting edge optic design and a modern aesthetic. IP65 can be achieved for use in bathrooms and wet areas. The Protec LED comes with a number of bezel, reflector, beam angle and colour attachment options and once installed, reflectors and colour attachments can be easily removed and replaced. This allows for lighting updates in-line with changes to room layout, new branding colour schemes or display rearrangement.

In the corridors and offices, 181 Modled Slim LED luminaires were chosen to help create a flat panel look in these areas. There are a wide range of lumen outputs available with 4 dimming options, an optional 3 hour emergency function allowing for installation in a wide range of applications.

There are further options for integral presence and daylight sensor with all dimming and emergency variants.

Multiple lumen options comply with the glare standards of BSEN 12464 allowing for use in offices and schools.

To work alongside the Modled Slim, 19 Modled Slim UGR were supplied for use in the offices to help create strong light levels. This also provides a minimalist flat panel appearance with a homogenous lit diffuser, the highly efficient back lit design gives superior energy efficiency and LED lifetime whilst the microprism panel ensures compliance with UGR 19 and BSEN 12464 glare criteria in all lumen outputs and room sizes.

The MODLED Slim UGR is available in a wide range of lumen outputs, dimming and emergency options, and lay in and pull up housings for compatibility with most ceiling systems

The blue back lit halo of the Discalo LED was one of the reasons why this product was used in the stairwells. The Discao LED also brought significant energy savings compared to the existing installation and 12 were supplied for this purpose.
