MUSIC BOX

The LCCM is a relatively new College forming in 2001 with 26 students but has expanded into a rapidly growing & ambitious institution with a brand new purpose-built creative campus known as the “Music Box” at the heart of London’s cultural Southbank. It has always focused on technology in music & was keen to replicate this in the lighting and electrical services in the new building.

We were invited to get involved by Mecserve Consultants in Wallington whose design team leader we had worked closely with on previous projects. Mecserve and the client had a very clear vision of what they wanted and all the of the selected styles were minimalist, compact, efficient and in the main had a Matt Black paint finish.

Hence we started the process of product selection to meet their expectations and often had to create new models and variants to achieve this. An important part of the product selection was also to provide the most efficient LED and gear array, while proving this in terms of calculations and working samples. Some of the samples we had never supplied in black before so the latest modifications to the Dextra paint plant to enable us to do this were welcomed.

It could be described as a challenging project due to the complexity of the building. It has very low ceilings, all services are exposed on the ceiling, all 7 floors of the Building are an unusual shape and the brief was to have a “funky industrial look” inside ( no paint all concrete ) – hence our Black luminaires from the Runway Suspended range, our new Runway Wall and the Comtec LED all helped to tick those specific boxes.

This project was definitely a journey with an evolving brief, new products, new colours and a complex lighting design, however in our arena of lighting specification projects we are able to successfully offer our total service.
